Schools have supposed strict anti-bully policies that are not enforced. We’ve had two suicides and a few more attempts in just the past two years. Plus the kid who was planning to blow up the high school. He counts as one of the suicides.

No kids, not a teacher, but I have a question: how widespread is the bully issue? Do I only hear about the extreme worst cases in the news, making it feel like the problem is more prevalent than it actually is? No justification in that comment, only curiosity.

February 23rd, 2012 at 8:40 AM
I believe some of the bullying that happens in school today really escalates because of the likes of cell phones, FB, etc. When you were younger, you got into fights cause you opened your mouth, things were said on the playyard, etc and then you won/lost and moved on. I think words posted via text/FB and sent out on a larger scale is what is really does the damage today. When you got in a fight (at least when I was younger), what 5 or 6 people where there to see it and kids forgot about it? Nowadays, it’s posted on Youtube in 12 secs for the whole world to view
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Weren’t we reading just a couple months ago that more single people, though not necessarily in a relationship, are living together? These sort of stories are such bullshit.

Archer high five! Just watched the entire first season this week thanks to Netflix.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Bullying is the “in” thing to be irrationally worried about. 2 of my wife’s cousins have “onlies” and one is in therapy for being bullied, and the mom of the other is down at the kid’s kindergarten every day to try and catch three kindergarten bullies in the act of terrorizing her precious precious. I’m not saying that bullying is BS, but this mom stalks her kid’s kinder class to watch him, in case three bullying five year olds bully her squishy five year old.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:53 AM
I wish they’d get the second season on there, too. Because there are some real gems in that run.

I got “bullied” pretty mercilessly from 3rd through 6th grade (Catholic pre-K through 8th school, class sizes of 30 per class), and I’m 99% sure it made me a better person. Didn’t really see it as bullying back then, though. It was just fights and getting made fun of. I just couldn’t figure out why the kids hated me so much. I changed schools in 7th grade and was thrust into popularity as the new kid, so that was nice.
/bullying is overrated

I did some go with the crowd bullying. Definitely not proud of it, epecially this one kid who peed his pants all the time and cried a lot. I would hope to think if it went beyond simple mocking I would have stopped. By the time I got to high school I didn’t partake in any of it and my high school was so big everyone didn’t know everyone.

I was bullied like whoa when I was school about my weight and race, and that was with me being fairly social and playing sports year-round. I can’t imagine how bad it would’ve been if I didn’t have the 10′s in my Mazada and take AP Biology.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:00 AM
If the anti-bullying campaigns stop one kid from administering that devastating wedgie or swirly, than I’m all for the campaigns, movies, etc.
But it is horribly naive to think that bullying will just go away because of a documentary or a few facebook campaign. As parents, we have to be better at helping kids cope when they are bullied.

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
I was bullied fairly badly most of elementary & middle school, eventually I developed thicker skin, just dealt with it and found my niche. It just sucks because kids are so much worse now it seems than they were when I was growing up.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
No, I realized later that I was just in a really weird class. Not many of the kids turned out very well. A couple got arrested for dealing coke, another impregnated a non-english speaking illegal (I guess that’s not so bad, it’s just weird), and another got arrested for armed robbery. This is out of one class of 30 kids.
I was the best athlete and the smartest boy in the class by far. I wasn’t conceited about it back then, either. I had 1 or 2 friends in my class, but most everyone else just went in on me daily. Like I said, I just switched schools mid 7th grade and I was suddenly a popular kid. It was very surreal for me at the time.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
I love the “I was bullied as a kid so now I’m an expert on bullying” mentality. I am so sorry that the anti-bullying message is an inconvenience to you. I guess the kids that kill themselves due to this are just weak. What about the rape victims, they just asking for it too?
Nothing wrong with helping out some kids who can’t help themselves.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
truf.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
when I was in elementary and high school I was kind of a dick. not really bullying because there was never anything violent, just making fun of people a lot. looking back on it I feel like a real asshole, especially since I have a nephew that gets picked on quite a bit.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
Going through what I went through made me be nice to the kids that got picked on real bad in high school, but I admit that I didn’t ever stand up for them. Which is shitty, in hindsight.

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Didn’t really mean to send this message, and I was joking when I said bullying is overrated.
But I do think getting my ass beat as a little kid 2-3 times a week on the playground would allow me to state I would know something more about bullying than someone that didn’t deal with the same thing.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:09 AM
I was bullied alot in school too. Know what stopped it? Fighting back some. Problem is, that’s been taken away from the kids getting bullied these days.

I can never grasp how it gets to the point where thoughts of suicide arise. I find myself wondering how the parents, if around, didn’t notice anything different about the kid.

What’s happening in that Jon Hamm article it’s like Notes From The Underground with a distrustful and somewhat sinister narrator.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
When I was a freshman, the seniors at the time would always knock the books out of the freshman’s hands — this one dude who, looking back on it, was a legendary prick, would always get my books coming through this one hallway. He tried it one day and I elbowed him right in the face with the book holding arm — he stopped. The best though, was my senior year when my friends put swastikas and hitler pictures all over my locker. One said “KingGrizz killed my grandma.” Good times.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
“she proved a puny plaything in the mighty grip of fate”
great narration.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Similar situation here, except the worst of the bullying happened to me in high school. I took it and developed a pretty thick skin. None of it bothered me that much, especially once I graduated and never had to see those people again.
Now I see those people on Facebook or wherever and laugh at the fact that they amounted to pretty much nothing.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:13 AM
in NJ, technically everything falls under the teacher to write a report about if the kid mentions it in classs. One admin in my wife’s school is actually handling just the reports full time and they had to hire someone else to do her real job.
i get the idea, teach them young enough that it won’t be tolerated and it will be minimized as they grow up.
i was bullied a bit, and thankfully, the wonders of facebook have allowed me to see the lives my bullies are currently living. Nothing like seeing “single, living in the same tiny town, at home with a part time job, and wall posts about people picking on them for being individuals” while I’m married, holding a steady well paying job and own my own home.
Karma is awesome.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:14 AM
I was bullied alot in school too. Know what stopped it? Fighting back some. Problem is, that’s been taken away from the kids getting bullied these days.
There was some something somewhere that I read where something like 90% (approximate, as I’m pulling from a foggy memory) of kids said they had been bullied, and something like 80% of those same kids said they had bullied somebody.
I think the worst I had it was in grade 7. I was a huge, huge, fat kid, and waiting on a growth spurt (passing the time eating tacos and cake), and we went into junior high with grade 7 and 8, where a dozen schools combined kids. And there were so many left back 8th graders there, just waiting to pound on pudgy white boys. The first few days it was inevitable that you’d take a few beatings. So all the white kids did.
Basically the opposite of Payaso. But all the bad stuff. Book stealing, gum in the hair, kicked in the pussy, it all happened to me.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
I understand the bullying. The thing that baffles me is how and when did suicide become such a prominent option to kids so young? I’ve seen stories of 9 and 10 year olds committing suicide.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Yeah, I was pretty much nice to everyone, but didnt get involved with standing up for those that were picked on because I was afraid the preppy kids would come after me next. I was happy in my middle class status in high school.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:16 AM
I guess the kids that kill themselves due to this are just weak.
I can never grasp how it gets to the point where thoughts of suicide arise.
that shit gets introduced from television. There’s a suicide epidemic, but it’s on television shows. They have suicides at DeGrassi junior high. And butt sex.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
can’t monitor text messages, private facebook posts and other online harrassment. it seems most of it stems from that.
i can see how kids could feel hopeless if they can’t get away from it, even at home, and it’s heart breaking.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Well, in some places bullying is actually pseudo-legislated.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
didn’t TBL do this with Alba?
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Agreed. The “No Tolerance” rule, even if you’re fighting back, you get nailed as well, which is total bullshit. I told my boy last year if a kid did something to him again, just take a swing right & then to knock that shit off. My wife got on me about the no tolerance thing and told him to ignore the kid. I call bullshit on that.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:19 AM

I got picked on mercilessly throughout middle school. Whole classes used to chase me at recess.
Cuz I was one ugly mo-fo.
Helped me in football in high school though, and I can now tell my 5-yr old “You don’t know bullying!” till the cows come home. He just looks at me and says “Yep, I got nothin’ on you…”
At 8, he’ll start bullying ME…
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Then don’t accept em? Block em etc.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
+1
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
yup, b/c even if there is evidence that a kid was being bullied for a long time and finally snapped by popping that kid in the nose, he’d get suspended or expelled for the same term as the bully.
and kids who stand up for others are also handled the same way with zero tolerance policies on fighting and causing a scene.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
It’s hard to put too much on the parents. It’s really, really hard to know what’s going on in your child’s mind/life all the time, mostly because kids don’t want their parents to know. As a general rule I think parents should be more involved in all aspects of their children’s lives, but that’s not easy. Especially as you slide down the socioeconomic scale.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
We going for 25 posts today? — because it looks like I wont be busy and I’m ready
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Only two posts up so far?
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Can’t you limit access to both of these things? You can’t stop your kid from seeing something at a friend’s house or on a friend’s phone, but you don’t have to provide the same access at home. Seems like you have to burn considerable calories these days to stay involved and up-to-date as a parent, so I wonder about the parents that aren’t. Then again, I wonder about the parentes that infiltrate every aspect of a child’s life, too.
I’d like to think I’d do the same thing. I’ll go to bat for my kid with the school if he/she is trying to protect himself/herself.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
It’s hard to put too much on the parents.
even the dad on Modern Family didn’t know that his skanky daughter put out.

best way is to not give your kid facebook access or cell phones until they are much older.
facebook isn’t exactly friendly to limiting the spread of information on their site, i’ve got tight privacy settings and i still get notifications about friends posting on other people’s wall or “liking” a video from someone i’ve never heard of before. kids who have friended everyone in their class that don’t use privacy settings would have issues.

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
agreed. Bullies don’t understand ignoring. They see it as a sign of weakness. The zero tolerance rules probably has a lot to do with the suicides. I had to let my son know, he has a right to fight himself out of a situation if he has to. Because I went over different scenarios with him such as being hemmed up in a bathroom or a corner where no teacher is around, and he kept saying ” I can’t fight, its against the rules”.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
The definitive book on the Columbine massacre, titled, uh, Columbine, spends a lot of time focusing on the parents of Kliebold and Harris. The outraged community turned a lot of their anger toward those families, blaming them for not doing enough to prevent the killings. There are some interviews in there that really make you feel for those parents.
Basically, sometimes kids do bad shit and there’s no one to blame but the kids.

Where I grew up had a really wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds — people on food stamps and living in government housing to CEOs of Fortune 500 companies kids — so it was more of a social class thing than a bullying thing. The poor kids hated the rich kids, the rich kids looked down on the poor kids, and the middle class kids (me) kinda had to make due.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Completely agree. That’s almost certainly part of why bullying seems to be an amplified issue these days. The kids with cell phones, computer, facebook, twitter, etc have no respite if they are bullied. For me, I just had to get through the school day and then I got to go hang out with my track club or soccer friends at practice. Some of these kids get an endless flow of being destroyed mentally just because of technology.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
It was weird for me as I came to this country at 15, and got dropped right into HS in a small Jersey Italian town. I got picked on by fat football players because of my accent and cultural ignorance. Things changed when I ran track with the most popular kid in my grade, and started kicking ass in class.
I’d slap a keylogger on my kid’s computer in a cocaine heartbeat.
Damn fucking straight!
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
the shocking thing to me about bullying is it’s existence in the first place. I graduated highschool with just under 400 other seniors and can’t think of a single person that was bullied in my hometown while we were growing up. I didn’t live in some utopia, kids just got into real fucking trouble if they instigated shit or began picking on someone. fights at my school were immediately followed with expulsion, and there was no honor associated with being suspended or expelled; it was a shameful event.

Isn’t that far worse than typical bullying? Your kid will end up wearing tin foil hats all the time and get bullied worse. Also, as he is growing up with the internet he’ll figure out pretty quickly how to get around it while learning not to trust you.

The worst for me was transferring from catholic school to a public school in the 6th grade. I didn’t know anyone and showed up the first day in my Sunday best as I had done every year since. I learned right quick to ask for jeans and t-shirts for my birthday.

yeah, my college roommate is a black belt in taekwondo and showed me some simple self defense things. never mastered how to disarm an attacker with blade, but i do remember the pain he put into my shoulder showing me how it’s done.
whatever martial arts is used in batman begins and the dark knight seems pretty cool to learn.

I got picked on a ton from fifth grade through most of my senior year. I was fat, had stupid hair, hit my growth spurt late, and sweated a lot because of the medicine I took for my asthma (No, I didn’t stink).
My school was full of a lot of well-to-do kids who thought they were better than everyone, plus it was very clique-y. I was a momma’s boy yet my dad was tough on me b/c his dad was on him so I pretty much just accepted all of the shit thrown at me from classmates. I tried to make peace with the other kids, avoid them in the hallways, ignore them, and even a few times fight back. All of it only festered the “bullying.”
It sucked, really sucked, and I stayed home “sick” quite a few times. By the end of my senior year I made a few friends and didn’t give a fuck about those assholes. Graduation was a watershed moment for my life; I turned a page. I look at my life now and realize how much stronger that bullshit made me. But damn if it didn’t almost break me.
I feel bad for every kid who’s seriously bullied. There’s a difference between getting shit, being picked on a bit, and having your life completely dictated by the actions of others.

The Haters Guide to the Oscars on DS is a delight. Also a delight, the Nat Geo special on the Escort Industry I watched last night. Interesting stuff. May as well legalize prostitution so the women can get protection and bennys. Those escort services are scum bags.

Supervised usage. And my kids are definitely not going to be allowed to play half the video games I play until they’re 14-15 either.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Just wondering, but do you have a kid? Just wondering. My kid is in kindergarten and they have six computers in the classroom plus two computer classes a week in the computer lab. Not to mention the web related homework he has once a week. I think that ship has sailed.
I agree. My 7&8 year old kids use a reading comprehension program called Raz Kids, which is exclusively online.
Instead of not giving them a computer, get one and lock it down tight with browser and parental controls. It’s pretty easy to do.

I must have gone to a bizzaro high school, as I never really saw any bullying, nor was I the victim of it. Of course there were people that would crack jokes at others expense if they did something dumb/funny I guess, but it wasn’t mean in nature, as far as I can recall. I went to a pretty huge high school too.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
I called out TBL on his twitter picture last night saying he had a played out haircut and weak gear, thought there was a ban hammer possibility — turns out he liked it, he really liked it!
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
that’s true, but in all fairness bourne is normally running away or in 1 on 1 situations. batman is normally surrounded by thugs who want to beat him up b/c he wears a costume, similar to bullying in school.

And I hate to break it to you, but monitoring your child’s online activity is responsible parenting. One day, when you become a parent, you’ll learn that.

Never really bad. When I was in Catholic school I was pretty popular. I was also third in my family and my sister had ton of rep as the rebel girl. MY brother unfortunately was a tiny dude who hung out with girls. He wasnt effiminate, but he got picked on a ton. If I had continued to the Catholic high school, I definitely would have continued on the road of being a huge douchebag. My mom yanking me into public school was a huge decision for the better in my life.

I believe some of the bullying that happens in school today really escalates because of the likes of cell phones, FB, etc. When you were younger, you got into fights cause you opened your mouth, things were said on the playyard, etc and then you won/lost and moved on. to view
I assure you, bullying was going on before FB and Twitter and YouTube. All the social media shit just means there’s a larger window into that world.
I love the “I was bullied as a kid so now I’m an expert on bullying” mentality. I am so sorry that the anti-bullying message is an inconvenience to you. I guess the kids that kill themselves due to this are just weak.
Was bullied pretty fucking bad throughout grade school and high school. Got bad to the point where I considered suicide on several occasions. I was a socially awkward kid made an even bigger introvert as a result. And that shit shapes you as an adult. I won’t claim to be an expert, but that shit is real and it’s fucking awful. Yeah, rules are on the books, but until schools do more to protect the kids, you’re going to keep having the problems.

My parents had me go the Catholic route because they thought I would be surrounded by good influences. When a kid was caught drinking Jack they realized that paying the extra money for a Catholic experience wasn’t really worth it.
I’m glad I made the switch too.

Difference between monitoring and spying on every keystroke. Generally don’t go for something morally wrong for the purported good of the children. Won’t someone please think of the children is responsible for a lot of retardation. Seems like a control freak thing, do not see how reading your kids love letters will help you child. When they find out they will justifiably freak out. Also on 4chan there are many stories on children wreaking havoc on their parents for spying on them. What are you expecting to find Jack Bauer you kid supplying a dirty bomb to the taliban or how much they have a crush on the kid sitting beside them?

I went to a small private school and got picked on mostly by the same guys I considered my friends. I left there after 8th grade went to public school and made new friends didnt get picked on anymore and I have better relationships to this day with friends i went to school with for 4 years as oppossed to those I went to school with for 8 years. Bullying sucks. My nephew is 6 and picks on my son sometimes mainly because he is bigger and I have to stop myself from kicking his ass.I usually try and give him a pass b/c he doesnt let other kids pick on him.
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:12 AM
No its not. As a parent you do what you have to do, monitor (or any other word you want to replace it with)to raise and teach your child.
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:12 AM

I feel you….people who haven’t experienced serious bullying don’t understand the bredth and depth of its effects….
Alls I know is I’m telling my kid, “if somebody puts their hands you, swing away.” My mom was the classic “just ignore them, don’t retaliate” parent, and I was afraid my dad would get mad at me if I ever fought back, and since he never really said much on the subject, I was kinda left to my own devices. I’m convinced that my best friend saved my life just by being around all those years.

Loved it. It was the day after we all discovered that CJ was a girl. So we started using gender specific terming when referring to her. Paola either missed the revelation that CJ was a girl or refused to believe and kept asserting that “CJ isn’t a girl, CJ is a fucking faggot” for at least a week.

I started reading and commenting on the site regularly after the Bears went to the Super Bowl in 06.

Of the old-timers, who can forget this whiny ass post from Ufford… http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2008/06/jason-mcintyre-tell-me-how-my-ass-tastes.html
Also, Hef used to write a weekly post called Hef’s Chronicles. I think it ran late on Friday. And then Hef and TBL had a spat or something.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Hahahaha. That was classic.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:10 AM
which spawned the creation of MLJ if I remember correctly. I’ve got an MLJ t-shirt somewhere around my house I won for a bracket or fantasy league or something.

Ufford is pretty useless. Drew is only truly great writer over there.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Ark, I always forget how long you’ve been around until I saw a web archived post from around 2008.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:13 AM
hilarious.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Pure classic line: “Thank you, Matt Ufford, for having the decency to not reveal my identity while I was collecting paychecks and wasting oxygen at US Weekly.”
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Funny thing, I bet this thread is sending a bat signal to the KSK crowd.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I started reaading around 2007 after the media writer dude in SI listed thebiglead as one of the upcoming sports sites. Started commenting around a year ago at this time.
I remember riffing with Jersey when Charlie Sheen went batshit nuts a year ago.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Who are the truly great writers over here?
Why does this site not have any archives, anyway? Would love to peruse some of the old stuff.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Hef kept pwnsaucing TBL and TBL took his ball and went home.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Funny thing, I bet this thread is sending a bat signal to the KSK crowd.
I doubt it. Ufford and then Maj stopped commenting here for the most part around 4 years ago.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Ah, pre buyout the archives were great. MikeNYC could remember you said a certain thing 6 months ago, and find it within 30 seconds.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:17 AM
wasn’t there a commenter by the handle of “the big deal” at one point in time?
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Who are the truly great writers over here?
Lisk is great. Duffy is good when he’s not pretentious. I gave up on young Jason being anything more than a headline writer awhile ago.
Why does this site not have any archives, anyway? Would love to peruse some of the old stuff.
Allegedly, the archives were lost in successive server switches. Though the conspiracy theory around these parts is that JMac purposefully deleted them to get rid of some of the more unsavory posts in the past (Bernard Berrian, Ole Miss, etc) that might taint him in the eyes of corporate America.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
free the archives.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Haha, I just got moderated for trying to refer to the TheBigL33d twitter account. That account’s been idle for like 2 years. C’mon.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:19 AM
wasn’t there a commenter by the handle of “the big deal” at one point in time?
Yes. He was supposed to be the baseball writer but I don’t recall him writing much. Then there was also Big Nuts who got into a spat with irishmafia. Irish destroyed him if I recall.

I dont remember this article but the comments are great. Here are some of the highlights:
-Thank God someone finally said it. Gay or not, TBL is like blogging for retarded frat guys. How can someone who constantly masturbates over New Yorker profiles be so incredibly stupid? J-Mac would post a picture of himself tongue massaging Matt Leinart’s taint for an hour if he thought it would get him 100 extra page views.
Nobody’s mentioned that the fucking pussy appears to be wearing a red/pink Yankees hat?
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:25 AM

That is my recollection as well. We’ve found some old posts in Google cache, but the comments are always gone.

wasn’t that Dave Lessa? a.k.a. the IT guy that was going to get the mobile site up and running by Labor Day 2009.

Not all of them. I know some cached posts have been linked here that include the comments. That’s how I discovered that arkbadger has been here a really long time too.

Amazing.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Not anymore… all that stuff has been blocked at work. Sadface.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:33 AM
We have a “mobile site” situation going on at my work right now. We asked one of the guys with pull of the CEO to get us a basketball hoop in the parking lot. He made lots of promises about getting a really good hoop and told us it was ordered and coming next week. That was about 9 weeks ago.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Yea, Internet Wayback Machine allows to find very selective archived posts with comments
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Started commenting back in 2005. I remember when the comments appeared that grey color scheme.

February 23rd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
This comment from the Choke City post has some wonderful foreshadowing:
Come on TBL, I’m starting to lose faith in your knowledge of simple sports facts.

February 23rd, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I should be watching. Throw up a post for the TNT double header (there is a second good game tonight), and maybe we can have some TBLAD.

TBL, you should return to that old smaller font. I don’t know about everyone else, but it’s way more aesthetically pleasing to me.

That one is great Jay. Especially this part:
we’re optimistic about the full-time addition of Jones – his recent fawning praise of terrible Mario Williams notwithstanding
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Good god, I’ve been commenting here for 5 years? I wish I could put stuff like this and still watching new Simpsons episodes on the resume as showing having strong commitment
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:50 AM
TBL, you should return to that old smaller font. I don’t know about everyone else, but it’s way more aesthetically pleasing to me.
Smaller font would mean having to write longer posts. Can’t have that brah.
I do miss the predominantly green color theme of the old site. It was different.

Lisk is better. Sanders even said so himself. But Cap knows a lot about football to be sure.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:15 PM
cue post by Big Brain on Brett.
I have to say that Jason handled the whole BBoB deal horribly. He talks about the guy like he’s a huge writer and that it was a true score to get him. We read his first post and it seems fratty and borderline juvenile at points, so we ask Jason who BBoB is. And the response we get is “Oh you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” So instead of allowing BBoB to find a following here or develop as a writer, Jason set him up for pot shots which BBoB was clearly never equipped to deal with. What a ridiculous episode that was.

February 23rd, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Ha. JMac dropped a “this guy Matt Ufford.”
Only posts I read on KSK are the ones written by Drew. Did you guys know Matt Ufford is a marine?
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Lisk is better. Sanders even said so himself. But Cap knows a lot about football to be sure.
Yes he is, but when Cap Rooney was replaced, we did not have any idea that old Jason (i.e. Lisk) would enter our little corner of the blogosphere.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Did you guys know Matt Ufford is a marine?
I know he mentions it and the fact that he was in Operation Iraqi Freedom as often as he can.
Still, for all Ufford’s other faults, and he has many, I salute him for his service and actually being in combat. Two things which I cannot claim to have participated in.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Agree, and I’m sure he could kick my ass. Dropping that into almost every one of the posts you author is kind of nauseating, IMO. Sort of like announcing how much you gave to charity last year.

A few months back he mentioned how he had trouble adjusting to civilian life when he got back on the tv blog. I have no clue what he is up to now.

February 23rd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
A few months back he mentioned how he had trouble adjusting to civilian life when he got back on the tv blog. I have no clue what he is up to now.
No doubt he saw and experienced some things which messed him up. I think he was actually an officer in a tank platoon, which is pretty cool. But that also means he would have been in the forefront of the advance on Baghdad.
The thing about combat is that no one ever knows how they are going to react to it. You have the Finnish sniper who in the 1940 Winter War with the Soviets killed over 500 Soviet solders by rifle fire and another 200 with submachine gun fire. When asked towards the end of his life if he felt troubled by what he done, he said that he didn’t at all. Now you have ungodly high suicide rates amongst veterans in and out of civilian life.
/this thread is getting somber
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:29 PM
i still want to see a book or article on the athletic ability guys in combat need…..the sprinting, leaping…imagine what you can do when you are athletic plus a heap of adrenaline

I’ve brought him up as a meme several times in the past and so if he’s here still he hasn’t taken the bait. Much like younglefty hasn’t taken the bait to come back and debate the merits of beef vs. pork BBQ.
February 23rd, 2012 at 12:48 PM
How long did the bulldog comment here? He was before my time and I never had any interaction with him at all, but he’s unloaded on me on twitter a few times, calling me a sperm guzzler, etc.
What an angry fellow.

MS … Maggs floats around on here, but it’s actually easy to confuse Maggs and “payaso”/”Clown”/”Miguel” these days. I make the mistake sometimes myself. But they’re different people.
Clown has slipped above than Maggs on the troll totem poll. He’s upset that I “unfollowed” him on twitter, so now he’s trying to “fight” back.
Just try harder, Miggy.

February 23rd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
was this directed at the EIC?
no, it was just in a roundup, or some regular post that people were basically chatting in (per as usual), then all of the sudden in pops JMac with a question/request. JMac says, I’m interviewing Dick Vitale in an hour, so if you have any questions you want me to ask him, put them in here now.
And you know, comment, comment, joke, defense of Vitale, but within 2 minutes, bam, “Do you smell like piss? Because you look like you smell like piss.” Right? That’s the question Magglio Merkin wants JMac to ask Dick Vitale.
The best, the end.
