Who is College Football’s Most Unlikeable Head Coach?
College Football February 24th. 2012, 2:40pm
College football may attract the nefarious, self-serving and overly ambitious, or perhaps the money and the intense pressure breeds them. Either way, the sport has more than its share of unloved individuals. Ranking them was too arduous, so we felt you should have your say. We’ve narrowed the choices to 10, and excluded Houston Nutt since he’s not a head coach at present.
Nick Saban (Alabama) Saban has built a juggernaut at Alabama based on cold cynicism and oversigning. This story from his brief time in Miami should dispel any notions about his soft side.
“Jeno James, our best offensive lineman at the time, comes in and collapses after practice, uh, vomiting all kinds of stuff that would make a billy goat puke, eyes rolled in the back of his head. Myself, about four other lineman are trying to carry him from the locker room, to the training room. Obviously it’s a moment of panic, everyone, you know, we don’t know if this guy’s, you know, gonna die, I mean, the whole deal. But he’s so big and sweaty and heavy that we actually have to set him down in the hallway between the locker room and the training room.
“Nick Saban literally just starts walking in, steps over Jeno James convulsing, doesn’t say a word, doesn’t try to help, goes upstairs, I don’t know what he does. But then obviously they get Jeno trauma-offed to the hospital.”
Randy Edsall (Maryland) It took the modern day Captain Bligh less than 12 months to unhinge Maryland football entirely. You measure a man by his actions. Running more than 20 players with eligibility out of the program, blocking Danny O’Brien from going to Vanderbilt solely because it would make him look bad, and backing down while still maintaining a petty tampering complaint says about all you need to know.
Bret Bielema (Wisconsin) Successful, runs a clean program. His claim to the title is entirely personality driven. No one likes a whiner, especially one unwilling to back up his claims in public. No one likes the guy who relishes running up the score against overmatched opponents at home. Two heartbreaking losses cost his team a BCS title shot last year. Few felt for him.
Urban Meyer (Ohio State) Why Urban Meyer? The duplicity. He’s the man of virtue who coached Tim Tebow. Ignore the 30 arrests. He retires from Florida to spend time with his family, yet is somehow a paragon of vigor when the Ohio State job comes available. He pledges to despise what college football has become and then enters the Big Ten on a rampage stealing others’ verbal commits. There was also this charming incident with a reporter and, of course, creating a nuisance for this couple.
Lane Kiffin (USC) Some people just have that look about them. There are the needless two-point conversions, the cheap shots at Urban Meyer and leaving riots and NCAA inquiries in his wake during his sour departure from Tennessee after one year. This is a man who departs Knoxville in the worst way possible WITHOUT HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW. Jealousy alone probably gets him on this list
Todd Graham (Arizona State) Graham left Pittsburgh after one year to join Arizona State, his fourth head coaching job since 2006. This was the second time leaving a program after one season. Naked ambition. Throwing out his family to blunt criticism. Departing with a vacant “God Bless.” in a text message. Todd Graham is truly odious.
Charlie Weis (Kansas) He rode into South Bend chirping about Super Bowls and Decided Schematic Advantage. Despite never meeting expectations at the college level, his arrogance has continued unabated. He’s fleeced more money from universities than a bowl executive. He has no problem reaming a kid in public on his way out the door. But, hey, people are definitely “talking about Kansas football.”
George O’Leary (UCF) Why George O’Leary? How about UCF being found negligent in a $10 million wrongful death suit? UCF player Ereck Plancher died from complications during the sickle cell trait. O’Leary had ordered water and trainers off the field during a strenuous workout. According to four UCF players, he “cursted at and singled out” a “woozy and staggering” Plancher for “lack of effort.” O’Leary had another player hospitalized in subsequent months for being dehydrated during a workout.
Bobby Petrino (Arkansas) Petrino was willing to negotiate a backroom deal to replace his former boss Tommy Tuberville at Auburn, before Tuberville had been fired. Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons during his first season to take the Arkansas job, informing his players by way of a lame note. There was also the charming incident where Petrino helped an Arkansas radio employee get fired for wearing a Florida hat.
Brian Kelly (Notre Dame) U Mad Bro? Besides the turnovers the notable portions of Brian Kelly’s tenure have been him blowing up at players on the sidelines, which may have cost him a chance at Dorial Green-Beckham, and throwing his players under the bus. More specifically, throwing the players he did not recruit under the bus. That’s not even getting into Lizzy Seeberg, Declan Sullivan hornets nests.

This is a real post.

Where’s Jabba The Hoke?
February 24th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Todd Graham has to be #1 — he was all kinds of bad for Pitt. He came in said this ridiculous speech about “high=octane offense”, was the face of the Pitt Football marketing efforts, performed terrible on the field, then left in a year. The other guys atleast win.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I’m going to go with Randy Edsall since I read his entry twice. Once was even in italics.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
It’s in bold, after I voted for him. I would hope your BCS replacement formula has better engineers behind it than this site.

Samesies for my Todd Graham pick

Where the fuck is Mark Dantonio?
/Souvenir City
February 24th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Brian Kelly is killing it at Notre Dame.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Is Dantonio really hated that much outside Michigan?
February 24th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
The lack of votes for Lane Kiffin is simply un-American
February 24th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
This post wasn’t really Duffy’s idea is it? Let’s be honest, who gives a fuck if they are likable? They’re football coaches, not running for school president.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Give it time. It’s noon on the west coast. Pac-12 fans are still getting out of bed/loading their first bong hits.

February 24th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
it’s a six-way tie between Lame Kiffin, Nick Saban, Will Muschamp, Herban Meyer, Mark Richt, and James Franklin.

February 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
The only hatred I’ve seen for Dantonio comes from SC. And that seems perfect because none of SC’s sports related thoughts ever make sense.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Did you run this by WWOS yet?
February 24th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Saban’s insufferable for sure, but at least he’s been around and you know exactly what you’re getting from him. He’s a tried and true, grumpy, cold hearted SOB and a helluva coach.
I voted Bielema, who whines when he loses a game and/or a recruit, hides behind his Twitter account, makes accusations about recruiting violations, all the while offering little or no proof that he’s actually a good coach. This year’s BCS loss was an abomination in coaching.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
George O’Leary just read this post and added “Winner of The Big Lead’s Most Unlikable College Football Coach Contest” to his resume.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Brian Kelly is killing it at Notre Dame.
So wrong, yet so right.
I think everyone likes Les Miles for his goofball antics and tactics. But I’m sure there’s at least a good portion of LSU’s fanbase ready to vote for his ass.
Aside: how odd to not see Steve Spurrier’s name up there. How the mighty have improved since leaving Gainesville.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Fuck ‘me all.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Not voting for Saban.
I hate him for what he did to LSU, but he’s the first guy on the list that I would choose to be my head coach (again).
I don’t know who I would vote for from that list, but I think I’d know if Steve Spurrier was on it.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
That business with him publicly trashing a high school kid because he decided to go to Notre Dame instead of LSU could have earned him a spot on this list
College football coaches are just the worst
February 24th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
how does one do this?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
I’ll go first.
/coop
February 24th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
But nobody (or very few people) hates him at LSU because he’s an insufferable prick. They hate him because he’s not Saban, and that’s a little unfair, even after 1/9.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
am I at TBL.com or ESPN First Take?
what a wasted post.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Most I know seem to llike him personally, except old guard Michigan guys and Free Press writers.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Fucking mama’s boy deserved it. Sack up and be a man and tell him you’re not coming instead of promising to enroll early and force Miles to take a scholly away from another guy who wanted to go to LSU and then early-enrolled at Auburn because there wasn’t a spot for him.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Duffy = Dana Jacobsen
J-Mac = Skip Bayless
CRM = Stephen A. Smith
Hernia = Rob Parker
February 24th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Kiffin will always be cool with me for making Al Davis fire and pay him rather than step down. In his last game, he let Janikowski try like a 76-yard FG. That is ultimate “Boss, fuck you and this job” move.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
um Brian Kelly? – a freaking kid died under his watch.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
No doubt. He’s a turd and he hates turds. Nobody wants to be a turd.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
George O’Leary just read this post and added “Winner of The Big Lead’s Most Unlikable College Football Coach Contest” to his resume.
Slow clap. Well done, my friend.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Duffy = Dana Jacobsen
J-Mac = Skip Bayless
CRM = Stephen A. Smith
Hernia = Rob Parker
Dunno who should feel more insulted, TBL or Duffy.
And is Eifling Sage Steele or Reschea Canidate?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Give it time. It’s noon on the west coast. Pac-12 fans are still getting out of bed/loading their first bong hits.
When we are subjected to your irrelevant posts Tyler, we need to swap-out for the six-shooter. Give us a minute…
February 24th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Duffy is Jemele Hill if Jemele Hill were an extremely technically proficient writer. Jacobsen is Billy Wagner.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I thought Miles was generally well liked outside of a few in game decisions. Seems like a pretty good guy to an outsider. And this poll needs more Spurrier. But I guess its harder to hate him since he isn’t hanging half a hundred on everybody like he did at Florida.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Karma for oversigning is how I see it
And you’re still talking about a high school kid changing his mind about college, good lord
February 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Choosing between Saban, Meyer and Petrino is a real conundrum.
As a Terp fan (not an alum), I just want to see Edsall get his ass kicked in a bar fight or alley.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Regardless of personality, I’d say being responsible for one individuals death brings Kelly/O’Leary to the top.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
This right here is why I have taken several steps back from college athletics. The older I get the faster I realized how pathetic that line of thinking really is.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Out kicking major ass on the 2013 recruiting trail.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Kiffin, by miles.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Karma for oversigning is how I see it
Agree
February 24th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Damn, that’s just cold. The thought never crossed my mind that Hernia was racist.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
It’s probably Petrino but the lack of Dantonio for consideration is upsetting. Guess he’ll have to be the bridesmaid again. Kinda like the Spartan football team.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Intersting, 3 Notre Dame coaches on there. Does the job just attract assholes or turn them into assholes?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
They’re all asses to some degree – however, at least Meyer and Saban have been pretty successful asses. Nothing sucks more than an unsuccessful asshole.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
If you read O’Leary’s paragraph, it’s hard not to vote for him (he only has one vote!)…unless voting for Kelly.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I’ll take that back. Hernia is Howie Schwab.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
People hate Jordan Jefferson more than they hate Les Miles, but Les is going to get his ass fired because of his blind loyalty to that POS unless they stay near the top for a while.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Intersting, 3 Notre Dame coaches on there. Does the job just attract assholes or turn them into assholes?
Chicken or egg?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
do i really have to vote for just one?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Saban’s going to win, but the post should be titled “College Football Coach I’m Most Jealous of and Want on the Sideline for My Team.”
February 24th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Les Miles essentially boarders on retardation making him a somewhat sympathetic “character”.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Again, early enrolling is different. He was supposed to be in a team meeting the day he changed his mind. It wasn’t like he changed his mind the day before signing day and wasn’t even supposed to be on campus for 4 months. And he didn’t change his mind. His mama freaked out on him.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
lol. nice.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Spartans will beat Michigan again next season.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Again, early enrolling is different. He was supposed to be in a team meeting the day he changed his mind. It wasn’t like he changed his mind the day before signing day and wasn’t even supposed to be on campus for 4 months. And he didn’t change his mind. His mama freaked out on him.
Good gawd, he’s 18. Don’t take it as a personal assault on your beloved athletic department. Coaches need to show some class with the kids that reject them.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Really? Choice of any coach and people would rather watch a deliberately boring team play defense and not make mistakes?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
We’ll see how boring the offense is when they put up 40+ on Michigan.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Really?
Yes really. I am an OSU graduate and I would want Nick Saban over anyone else on the sidelines. Dude wins.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Really? Choice of any coach and people would rather watch a deliberately boring team play defense and not make mistakes?
I think most people would rank winning MNCs over style of play.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
No Pelini? I’m a Husker fan and even I get tired of him being a prick all the time.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
If I could have any coach in college football it’s Nick Saban 471 days a year, Duffy. The dude disciplines 18-22 year old kids better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Not to mention all the football knowledge floating around in his head.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Saban’s going to win, but the post should be titled “College Football Coach I’m Most Jealous of and Want on the Sideline for My Team.”
Ummm, no.
I’ll give up Nat Champ winning if that requires me to constantly worry that my head coach is going to say or do something that will completely embarrass my school. I won’t site the examples … there’s plenty and I’m sure they’ll be another one sometime between Spring practice and summer workouts.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Aight? Aight.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
That’s the point. HE NEVER REJECTED THEM. He told Les Miles the day Spring Semester began that he was still coming. The LSU coaching staff didn’t find out for sure that he wasn’t coming until Notre Dame issued a statement. I don’t care how old you are. Les Miles was at least owed an explanation.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Escalades, houses and suits can really keep a student-athlete in line.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Comment driven posts!
February 24th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Probably still pretty boring.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
If UGA could get Saban I’d personally help Richt move.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
But I’m sure it just breaks their hearts when they have to tell a kid who thought there was a scholarship coming “Whoops, sorry”
I’ll pass, I enjoy liking the teams I root for (already having a hard enough time wishing good things for the current meathead in the position)…Saban’s a bully who enjoys the God complex afforded him by coaching at the amateur level
February 24th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
He’s a ruthless disciplinarian, especially when he needs to make roster limits.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Then cuts them.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
No Pelini?
Oh yeah The Brothers Pelini should get a mention.

ESPN dumps the hooker-killer
February 24th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
you keep a mirror behind your monitor just so you can highfive yourself when you make comments like this, don’t you?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
If my team wins I like it.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
So the question becomes: the “Win at all costs” super-coach who guarantees you a title every few years or the “Happy to be here” coach who has a nice demeanor and makes you happy to go to your school but wins only every so often?
Knowing CFB fans out there, I’m guessing most take Option A all day.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Saban
February 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Duffy = Dana Jacobsen
J-Mac = Skip Bayless

Hernia = Rob Parker
Would Barry Janoff be Ron Franklin?
February 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Saban!
February 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
SABAN!!
February 24th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
I’d take Saban over Kirk Ferentz in a cocaine heartbeat.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
So next year CFB will have kick-offs from the 35. Fuck that.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Somehow fat ass Brady Hoke who steals other teams verbals, is off this poll. Who wrote this? Duffy? Oh that’s why fatty isn’t on here.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
I wouldn’t count on it. Doug Nussmeier is really fucking good at his job. He turned Keith Price into what he is. With the talent that Alabama has I wouldn’t be surprised to see them putting up offensive numbers to match their defense. Only question mark Nuss has on his resume is that Sark called the plays. Might take a little bit to get going, but the offense will only get better under Nuss.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:35 PM

February 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Yep, winning two titles in three years sucks. I don’t really recommend it. And if you say you would give up winning a NC to not have a Saban, you’re a fool.
Also, who gives a fuck he cuts people. If I didn’t maintain my grades in college, guess what, they would have yanked my scholarship. Why should athletics be any different.
They are using him to get to the NFL, and he uses them to win games, and if that isn’t clear to you, then you are a fucking idiot, and should stop watching college football.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I don’t care what my pro team’s coach is like – just win.
When you’re representing my school, show some class, don’t embarrass me and don’t make me apologize to my friends when you’re a dick.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
If you read O’Leary’s paragraph, it’s hard not to vote for him (he only has one vote!)…unless voting for Kelly.

February 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I’d say Kirk Ferentz should be on this list, but no one gives a shit about Iowa football. Not even the alumns, right SC?

February 24th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Try harder. I don’t think even Ryan Braun’s lawyers could convince anyone that Ferentz is unlikable. He’s practically invisible.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
is it really stealing a verbal, when verbals are completely non-binding? that probably has something to do with why he isn’t on there.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Just like the rest of the football program.
February 24th, 2012 at 3:49 PM

Saban represents my school by winning, and that works for me. I’ve never been embarrassed that he is the coach of my alma mater. If winning is important to you, then I’m willing to bet you went to school that has a team that’s never been a winner.
And if you’ve ever felt the need to apologize about your coach, then you are a spineless douche.

No. You missed it completely.
I have never HAD to apologize for my coach.
I have a high regard for my school – it’s more than winning football.
