Jim Boeheim: Carmelo Will Never Win a Title with These Knicks Because His Teammates Suck
By Jason McIntyre
Boeheim, talking to Chris Carlson of the Syracuse Post-Standard, essentially said Tyson Chandler (who won a title two years ago) and Kenyon Martin were either too afraid or clumsy to catch passes, but levied his most brutal assessment on Raymond Felton and JR Smith.
"“Those guys weren’t great players where they were and now they’re asking them to be second and third options. In Miami the second and third options are Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Your fourth option is Ray Allen, who is still in good shape. Your fifth option is Shane Battier, who is still a good player. The New York Knicks have who?”"
Ouch. Where was this lacerating criticism when the Knicks were winning 54 games and earning the 2nd seed in the East? Boeheim obviously knows basketball, but he must not have followed the Knicks closely the last two years if he says lunacy like this:
"They run an isolation offense so he goes one-on-one all the time. It’s hard. It’s hard work. They need more of an offense where he can get something going. He has to work too hard. That’s not his fault. That’s how it’s set up."
Let’s remember – after Carmelo Anthony had Mike D’Antoni fired, Melo hand-picked Woodson (so the story goes) because he’d get to call the shots and run whatever offense he wants. So this iso offense is what Melo wants.
Anyway, Jim, go back to picking on Andy Katz. You’re embarrassing yourself here defending Melo. He’s a grown man who makes $19 million a year. He can defend himself. [Syracuse.com]
