Canadian Announcer Rips Sydney LeRoux, Calling her "Way Too American For Me" After Goal Celebration [Video]

Sydney LeRoux, the up-and-coming women’s soccer star, capped a 3-0 USA victory over Canada Sunday with this terrific goal in stoppage time. The blowout came on Canadian soil, and the post-goal celebration by LeRoux – popping her USA jersey – was not well-received. You see, LeRoux was born in Canada. The celebration didn’t sit well with Sportsnet’s Craig Forrest who said, “That’s way too American for me … They can have her.” LeRoux’s actions were apparently so stomach-churning for Forrest, he applauded when the referee handed her a yellow card after the celebration.

The social media-savvy LeRoux took to Twitter to let her feelings be known Monday morning:

This is not the first time LeRoux has been booed by Canadians after she switched allegiances to the country of her father, former Angels pitcher Ray Chadwick. LeRoux played for the Canadian U-20 team before switching to the United States in 2008. She now has 16 goals in 34 caps.

The recent hostilities between the two national teams stem from the 2012 Olympics when the U.S. won 4-3 in the semifinals. The Canadians felt they were screwed by the referee who whistled their goalie for the rare “six second violation” late in the match, which paved the way for the Americans to come back and eventually take home the gold medal.
