Jamey Carroll, Twins' Utility Infielder, Throws Scoreless 1-2-3 8th as Minnesota Loses 13-0

Jamey Carroll, a 39-year old infielder for the Minnesota Twins was called on for an inning of relief during the team’s 13-0 beating by the Kansas City Royals on Monday. Carroll did what no other Twins’ pitcher could do – threw a 1-2-3 inning. Carroll, who has played for the Expos, Nationals, Rockies, Indians, Dodgers and Twins has now played 7 positions in his major league career. (He also scored the final run in Montreal Expos history.)

First, Elliot Johnson lined out to Oswaldo Arcia. This was the most adventurous out of the inning as Arcia was handcuffed and caught the ball falling over.

For the second out, Mike Moustakas flied out to right. The scouting report never said anything about Carroll being a fly ball pitcher.

Finally, George Kottaras grounded out to Brian Dozier to end the inning. Watch as Carroll – who hasn’t pitched since high school – instinctively runs to cover first on the ground ball on that side of the infield. This guy is a baseball player.

In the end, Carroll threw 9 pitches – 4 strikes, 2 balls and 3 balls in play.

At some point during Carroll’s dominate outing, this Twins fan in KC… I don’t know. Unfortunately, it looks like cameras cut away right before a Royals fan dumped a beer on his head. Oh what could have been.
