The 82nd Annual Academy Awards are Sunday evening, with this year being the first ceremony in Oscar history where 10 nominees will compete for Best Picture. Exciting stuff! With that in mind, here’s NFL blogger and noted film historian Cap Rooney on who will – and who should – claim victory in the major categories. We’ll leave stuff like Best Costume Design and Best Mixing to the real experts. For those of you participating in an Oscar pool, here are the odds.
Nominees: Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air Read the rest of this entry »

Well, we’re (as of this posting) about 12 hours into the 2010 NFL free agency period and so far we have – zilch. Other than a fornication-happy former Pro Bowl corner being traded to the Jets, but that’s TBL’s territory. Not that this signing silence should surprise anyone. When all the “uncapped year” talk began months – and months – ago it was assumed that it would take the sizzle out of this year’s free agent class. Players who would otherwise be granted unrestricted free agency after four years of service were relegated to restricted status, and this week the word “tender” became the web’s most Tweeted NFL phrase that didn’t involve “Chad Ochocinco,” “park” or “penis.” Read the rest of this entry »

Because you come to sports blogs for film commentary, here’s a look at what’s new in theaters this weekend, movies you may have missed, and the latest in silent, avante garde imports from France. Just kidding about the last part. I’m shamelessly ripping off Siskel & Ebert, I’m not that highbrow. Read the rest of this entry »

The NFL’s annual Under Armour commercial – where freakishly large, freakishly fast, freakishly freakish athletes race through cones, press weights and sprint in spandex – begins today in America’s cultural abattoir, Indianapolis. For six days, more than 300 of the nation’s finest collegiate football players will be examined, interviewed and – for the very top prospects, at least – asked to name their price (off the record, of course – that’s tampering!). It’s the NFL’s version of speed dating, only with more skin and sailed sideline routes. For the football nut, it’s must-see TV. For the casual fan, it all seems a bit insane. This is the Internet, where keyboards are weapons used to eviscerate the rich and famous. In keeping with this philosophy, here are today’s five directors whose reputations most outweigh their achievements. Feel free to disagree and call me a moron in the comments. You’ll probably have a point. Read the rest of this entry »

Now that we’ve dissected the Super Bowl in every possible way, established that Peyton Manning is terrible at football and that the Saints have rebuilt New Orleans by winning an NFL championship, it’s time to look at what the future holds for the Super Bowl XLIV victors. Specifically, their 2010 roster. What’s it going to look like? Potentially, very different. The Saints have almost 30 restricted and unrestricted free agents heading into 2010. That seems like a lot, no? Read the rest of this entry »

Before I delve into the five NFL plots worth pondering over the NFL’s interminable seven month (seven months?) offseason, I’ll offer up my quick Super Bowl thoughts, since I’m sure you’re wondering how I took it. Actually, I’ll put them at the end so as not to clog up TBL’s front page (or put my wounded pride on full display). Read the rest of this entry »
