Quinnipiac 3, Union 2  F/5 OT: "Only two games in NCAA history have gone to five overtimes. Union has played in them both, and hosted them both. And now lost in them both. The 150:32 total time featured 130 shots, including a school-record 75 by the Dutchmen. Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke made an ECAC Tournament-record 73 saves; he allowed two goals in the first 10 minutes and none in the next 140. Meanwhile, Union freshman Keith Kinkaid made 52 saves in his postseason debut." It was the longest college hockey game of all-time. Now back to our regular scheduled programming. Vince Vaughn stuffing face in name of the USAWell, this is it. No, seriously, this is it. Today’s gold medal duel between the USA and Canada marks the last time a hockey post will not be a one-liner for the rest of the year. Soak it in while you can.

For the next few hours, regardless of whether your allegiance lies with Hogan’s entrance music or Bret Hart’s, you must honor the sport of hockey by adding a ‘y’ or an ‘ie’ to the end of each person’s name that you’re watching the game with. It will make Barry Melrose proud. Read the rest of this entry »

Ryan Miller just wants to get to know youMore Pranks Calls Involving Professional Athletes: Our week of awkward live moments in sports television continues. Last night it was a Ryan Miller imposter on MSBC. For such a lengthy prank, it's lacking the sizzle that Captain Janks brought in his well orchestrated nonsense, but fake Ryan Miller did close strong -- "Thanks guys, and I just wanna say that we're almost as confident to guarantee victory in the gold medal game." Olympic Hockey – Canada vs. Slovakia

Canadian-hockeyWell, this is it. Canada wants to own the podium (Does it count if they buy the podium?) and the biggest of big deals for Canadians is the Gold Medal in hockey. They win tonight, they move on to face ‘Merica for another good old fashioned border war. Friend against friend. Brother against brother. Just like the Civil War and that depressing Jake Gyllenhaal movie. (I haven’t see it, so that’s pure speculation.) Read the rest of this entry »

John-Shuster-What-Me-WorryEvery week The Sports Hernia and Cousins of Ron Mexico will recap the top five stories of the week. They are listed by importance, humor and relevance with a high degree of historical perspective in mind. Mostly, we’ll be reviewing the stuff TBL has run into the ground over the last few days, but sometimes a story slips through the cracks. Olympic Hockey – USA vs Finland

Hockey, Olympics 84 Comments »

Ryan-MillerOnly one team stands between the United States and the Gold Medal game. That team is Finland and they just happen to be lead by the hottest goalie (/TBL’d) in the Olympics, Miikka Kiprusoff. In ice hockey, a hot goalie can carry you a long way. Team America’s goalie hasn’t been too shabby himself, as Ryan Miller has been outstanding during the Olympics, but Kiprusoff has been just a little bit better. Read the rest of this entry »

Slovak Barteshko bleeding everywhere after nasty shotThis is actually from two nights ago, but it kind of sums up the one-sided, 7-3 stomping Canada gave Russia last night after everyone was expecting an epic showdown. The quote of the night came from NBC analyst Mike Milbury, who after the game said “I was really disappointed that these guys came with their Eurotrash game,” in reference to Russia’s shoddy effort.
