Stephen Strasburg: The Nationals are being cautious with the Most Hyped Pitcher MLB Has Seen in Years, but they also know that once they're 20 games under .500 by June, Strasburg is the only way anyone will pay money to see that awful team. Here's the perfect plan: His first start should be July 4, at home against the Mets. Holiday weekend. Millions of people in DC for the fireworks festivities. ESPN would bump the Royals-Angels snoozer without hesitation. The game would definitely be a sellout. The All-Star break is a week later, so when Strasburg pitches a gem and wins, he can be the talk of Anaheim. [USAT] (23)
Stephen Strasburg: The Washington Nationals savior opened his career in the Arizona Fall League Friday night, and Stephen Strasburg was impressive: Just two hits in 3 1/3 innings, no runs allowed. He threw 50 pitches, 32 of them for strikes. His pitch limit will be 60-65 pitches in his next outings Thursday. Only 21, the Nationals should try to start this kid on opening day. [MLB.com] (6)

Stephen Strasburg’s 1st Game: Scottsdale Scorpions

Stephen Strasburg 12 Comments »

stephen_strasburgStephen Strasburg, the No. 1 pick in this summer’s MLB draft makes his debut Friday in something called the Arizona Fall League. He’ll be facing the Scottsdale Scorpions. We only recognize two names from that roster: Buster Posey – because Posey makes us think of Parker, who is cute in just about every movie she’s ever been in – and Jose Tabata, who was once a prized Yankees prospect. (You know the New York media – once, they called him the next Manny Ramirez!) Tabata was eventually shipped to the Pirates. Also, Tabata famously married a cougar who is/was crazy. Stephen Strasburg: The phenom just signed the most lucrative contract in baseball draft history, and he's puzzled by how many photographers and reporters are following around his every move on the field. "I thought I'd get a little peace out here on the field, but you guys follow me everywhere. I guess it just goes with the territory. It's something I'm going to have to learn to deal with." He won't even throw off the mound until mid-Sept. and he'll face instructional hitters in late Sept. Perish the thought of him pitching this season. [Washington Times] (56)

Stephen Strasburg to the Nationals for Only $15 Million

Baseball, Stephen Strasburg 50 Comments »

For a few hours this morning, Stephen Strasburg was the top story in sports. The Nationals finally won something, Scott Boras lost in his quest for $25 or $50 million, and a dollop of optimism was injected into the nation’s capital overnight. With a bevy of young arms in the minors – led by Jordan Zimmermann and shortly, Strasburg – and a batting lineup that’s quietly in the top 10 in average and OBP (and top 15 in OPS), it’s probably not a stretch to say that the summer of 2011 could bring relevant baseball to the DC area for the first time since the Orioles reached the postseason as a wild card team in 1996. The only negative in all of this? To hear Scott Boras attempt to spin his way out of this loss tomorrow. [Washington Post, SI]

Five Hours Left for the Scott Boras to Temper His Greed and Get Stephen Strasburg to Washington

The Nationals have reportedly offered a record $12.5 million to the No. 1 pick in June’s draft, Stephen Strasburg. (Previous record: $10.5 million to Mark Prior; he has won 42 games in his career, and appears to be done.) His agent, the notoriously greedy Scott Boras, wants closer to $50 million. The Super Bowl Rematch, and the Girl That Broke up Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian Speaks

Courts, Legal, NFL, Stephen Strasburg, Video 49 Comments »

Dueling preseason games between four teams that have reached the Super Bowl in the last five years dot tonight’s schedule: The Patriots vs. Eagles on ABC and the Steelers vs. the Cardinals on ESPN. Non-football “news”: The Reggie Bush-Kim Kardashian split last month apparently was because he was cheating on her with a “model” named Carmen Ortega. She gave a lengthy interview to a radio station and said the Saints RB dated her for three months on the side. It also sounded like she was going to sell text messages she had from Bush. Wonderful. MLB Draft Coverage: Bud Selig Is Cranky Kong

Baseball, Stephen Strasburg, Television 20 Comments »

At 6:00 PM yesterday evening, Bud Selig read a prepared statement so vapid not a single word committed to memory.  This stirring start set the tone for the scintillating multi-hour television spectacular that was the MLB Draft.

The Summer of Stephen Strasburg Begins Tuesday

Baseball, Douchy Agents, Stephen Strasburg 148 Comments »

The MLB draft is at 6 pm Tuesday. San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg, the greatest pitching prospect ever, is the sure-fire No. 1 pick. Strasburg’s agent, the insufferable Scott Boras, is set to shake up baseball: He’s going to demand Dice-K money because Strasburg’s supposedly an otherworldly talent with a fastball in the upper 90s and a filthy curveball.
