So while the game is newsworthy right now, Assassin’s Creed has been a series that has entertained fans for years. Since the titular game’s debut in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has combined art, history and violence seamlessly. And it has done so with great success. With the debut of Revelations, the Assassin’s Creed series will move past 30 million games sold worldwide.

With its fourth major release in five years, Assassin’s Creed has impressively managed to keep each title fresh enough to keep fans coming back. Each new release features a noticeable improvement, either in gameplay or new features. The multiplayer universe is just as intense and addictive as the story mode. The game also welcomes new players easily as the controls are quick to pick up, but like any good game, take time to master.

The game is both visually stunning and extremely addictive, which has always worried me.  I have a very addictive personality when it comes to video games, so I’ve tried to steer clear of games like Assassin’s Creed for fear of losing weeks and months of my life at a time. The fact that everyone I have ever heard talk about the series speaks of it with unparalleled reverence is terrifying. I’ll allow someone who has been a fan of the game since day 1 a chance to explain why it’s one of the best video game series available.

While the gameplay exists completely in the past in some of the more beautiful and historic locations you can imagine, the protagonist is actually a bartender named Desmond Miles who exists in the year 2012. If only we were all lucky (or cursed) enough to be descendants of a long line of assassins.

One thing that sets Assassin’s Creed apart from other games is its historical accuracy. The games have all done a tremendous job of recreating the people, art and architecture of Renaissance-era Italy. Historical characters like the Borgias family make appearances. It’s this part of the game that makes it an interesting play for people who may not always be drawn to an action-adventure genre, or even video games in general. In addition to being able to kill people, you also get to take in Italy during one of the most famous eras in world history.
