Assassin’s Creed: Revelations continues the story of Desmond Miles and his assassin ancestors, Ezio Auditore and Altair Ibn-La’Ahad. Desmond is stuck in some kind of coma where he’s trying to put together his memories through the memories of his ancestors. I’m not 100% sure how we got here, having never completed any of the earlier games, but I sure am enjoying being there.

The first thing that strikes you about Revelations is that the game looks great. The story telling portions of the games are interesting enough to keep you from skipping and the scenery once you get to Constantinople is awesome. The city is so expansive that you can run around for hours without realizing you haven’t actually accomplished anything that will advance the story.

The game play was easy to pick up, but I’m still trying to figure out how to put everything together. The tutorials are helpful and seem more natural to the story than in past games I’ve played. You wouldn’t think climbing buildings would be that fun, but it is.

A new addition to the series is what designers describe as “Inception-like” or “Dali-esque first-person platforming missions.” Basically, you play as Desmond and try to recapture or piece together your memories. The mini-games teach you Desmond’s back story as you complete different steps.

One of the coolest new additions is the hook blade which makes the climbing seem more dramatic as your assassin reaches greater heights. It also allows you to use zip lines between rooftops.

Revelations compares very favorably with the previous Assassin’s Creed titles and is a worthy successor to the previous games. As a gamer who is fairly new to the series, it’s easy to jump right in with minimal knowledge of the origins of the story. Assassin’s Creed has a large online following with a ridiculously detailed Wiki. After spending a few days with the newest installment, it’s easy to see why.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to hit RESUME.
