Weekend Netflix Movie Recommendation: Goon

When they first released the trailer for Goon last September, I completely dismissed it. Having seen Goon last weekend, I am absolutely ashamed of that post. Ashamed! Goon was not only funny, but it also passes as a good sports movie.

Sean William Scott plays Doug Glatt, a sweet, innocent, dumb bouncer who ends up in hockey’s minor leagues as an enforcer. Scott is great – a dimmer, nicer version of his previous characters.

Jay Baruchel, who wrote the movie with Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express, The Green Hornet… I’ll stop before I discredit the man.), plays a supporting role as an over-the-top Masshole. Luckily, they use him sparingly enough, that the character’s assholeish behavior never crosses the line from funny to annoying.

Kim Coates (Tig from SOA), Kim Pine Alison Pill, Liev Schreiber and everyone else is great. Hell, even Eugene Levy doesn’t make you want to turn off the movie. The locker room banter is funny and the fight scenes are bloody fucking violent. In the end, it turns out to be a damn good sports movie.
