Don't Make Gregg Popovich Happy (You Wouldn't Like Him When He's Happy)

Thursday night during the Spurs 86-84 victory over the Thunder, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich took the always awkward coach/sideline reporter cat and mouse game to another level. When asked by David Aldridge if he was happy with his team’s shot selection, Coach Pop unleashed this gem.

"“Happy? Happy? Happy’s not a word we think about in the game, think of something different. I don’t know how to judge ‘happy.’ We’re in the middle of a contest. Nobody’s happy.”"

These contrived in-game interviews never achieve their desired goal of informing the fan. Generally, I’m either entertained by the coaches level of assholery (my word) or sympathetic to the sideline reporter that looks like they want to crawl into a hole. The NBA provides fans with many opportunities for inside access. It’s time to do away with these and leave these grumpy old men to their work.
