France had the chance to all but clinch World Cup qualification and relegate Spain to a playoff with a result at home. It was not to be. Spain controlled the game at their now customary plodding and uninspired pace. But French keeper Hugo Lloris batted a ball into the net and 20-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba sent France down to 10 men with two bookings in less than two minutes. 1-0 to Spain. Soccer is a game of inches and composure.

Spain can qualify for Brazil  by winning their remaining matches. France probably need to go through the second-place playoff.
