Yu Darvish was dealing tonight, and struck out 14 Astros batter. Oh, and through eight and two-thirds innings, he had a perfect game bid. Marwin Gonzalez, the last possible batter Yu had to face before achieving history, then hit one right back up the middle to break it up in heart breaking fashion.

Yu Darvish would have tied Matt Cain last year for the most strikeouts in a perfect game, and would have also thrown the earliest complete game no-hitter (perfect game or not) ever, surpassing his fellow countryman Hideo Nomo, who did it on April 4, 2001.

Here is a current list to the number of perfect games lost [an earlier version had an incomplete list from an earlier article from SABR] with two outs in the ninth, with Galarrraga’s being the most recent.
