The Rays were down 5-4 in the top of the 9th inning and two outs with Ben Zobrist at the plate and a runner on 1st. Zobrist was pushed into a full count by pitcher Joe Nathan when Nathan threw a breaking ball low and outside. Umpire Marty Foster called it a strike. Tampa manager Joe Madden had every right to go ballistic.

Madden said of the call: “Without getting to unload my brain, which I’d really like to do right now. That cannot happen in a Major League baseball game. That call cannot occur.”

Umpire Marty Foster issued the following statement after the game: “I saw the pitch and of course don’t have the chance to do it again. But had I had a chance to do it again, I wouldn’t call that pitch a strike.”

This call of the strike out by Dave Willis is great!
