"With the 76th pick of the 213th NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select..."

To read the Cowboys 3rd round section in the 2013 NFL Draft, the NFL trotted out some of the brave men and women who serve our country in the armed forces. The female Marine who read the first part of the selection said, “With the 76th pick of the 213th NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select…” The only problem was that it was the 74th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Now, I am not posting this to poke fun at the woman who is serving our country. I have all the respect in the world for her and in a similar situation, I’m sure I would mess up because I was nervous to be live in front of millions of people. I am posting this to point out what a pointlessly stupid spectacle the NFL Draft has turned into. The NFL put this woman in an awkward position for no good reason. Unless they are hoping for incidents like this to continue drawing extra eyes to their bloated 3-day pageant.

Bringing out a different former player or random person who won a contest to read every single pick devalues moments like Steve Gleason coming out to read a selection. Bring out police from Boston the week after the Boston Marathon bombing is a special moment, but what does it really mean if you have a former draft bust reading the next pick and a guy who bought the right Snickers bar read the one after that? It cheapens the moments that should matter.
