Clippers Could Get Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Doc Rivers? Seriously?

Woj broke the news over the weekend, and writes that the deal could happen today. My reading between the lines? The Celtics are ready to start over without Pierce/KG, but why would Doc Rivers – who had three deep playoff runs in the last six years, including one title – want to do that?

So the Clippers hope perhaps they can generate some of that Doc/KG magic on the left coast, and maybe they’ll scoop up Paul Pierce after the Celtics amnesty him (well, that’s the guess here).

Then, maybe the other rumored deal will follow: Blake Griffin and Bledsoe to the Lakers for Dwight Howard.

So in two trades (and possible the Pierce acquisition, assuming the money is right) the Clippers could go from this 56-win team:

PG – Chris Paul
SG – Chauncey Billups
SF – Caron Butler
PF – Blake Griffin
C – DeAndre Jordan

To this:

PG – CP3
SG – [Shooter on the cheap to be named later … Anthony Morrow? Gary Neal?]
SF – Paul Pierce
PF – Kevin Garnett
C – Dwight Howard

And Doc Rivers has to be worth, what, at least a few wins, studies be damned? Number one in the West?

Perhaps they’ll build the bench the way the Heat did – veteran role players like Mike Miller, Shane Battier and Ray Allen. It wasn’t long ago that the Magic, with Dwight Howard surrounded by four shooters, got all the way to the NBA Finals.

[Let’s save the Lakers analysis of this – Gasol, Griffin, Bledsoe and Kobe – for if/when the deal happens. That quartet is pretty nasty, too. If the Clippers and Lakers actually do these deals, did Kevin Durant just lose a couple years on his quest for a title?]
