What is it about third-place matches at FIFA tournaments that tends to make them absolutely bonkers? Today’s Confederations Cup Third Place match between Italy and Uruguay will go down as an afterthought on the sporting calendar, but it’s proven to be an entertaining match on a day where not much else is going on with goals galore.

Alessandro Diamanti, who sort of had a goal in the first half only for it to be overturned by FIFA at halftime and awarded to teammate Davide Astori, scored this curling free kick to put Italy ahead 2-1.

Minutes later Uruguary’s Edinson scored his second of the day, matching Diamanti’s free kick. With each goal at the Confederations Cup the Napoli striker’s transfer fee goes up a few million. Let’s hope he doesn’t end up at Stamford Bridge with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea 2.0.

The match is currently tied at 2-2 and headed to extra time. Why there an extra time for a third-place game is beyond me.
