The summer of discontent for the Mexican National Team may have reached its nadir Sunday night at the Rose Bowl when it lost 2-1 to Panama in the Gold Cup opener for both clubs. Mexican fans aren’t very happy with coach “Chepo” de la Torre and tried to hit him with cups as he walked into the tunnel after the loss.

In de la Torre’s defense, he only had six players on the tournament roster with more than double-digit caps. Still, de la Torre’s days are certainly numbered. If he doesn’t win the Gold Cup, figure he’ll be fired. It could happen even if Mexico recovers and win the tournament.

After winning the Gold Medal at the London Games last August, it’s been all downhill for El Tri. In 2013 Mexico is 2-3-8, including five 0-0 results. The team also crashed out of the Confederations Cup last month, losing to Italy and Brazil before avoiding the 0-fer with a win against Japan. Mexico is only third in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Hexagonal, one point ahead of Honduras for an automatic place in Brazil next June.
