New York Giants safety Will Hill has been suspended four games without pay for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Under the conditions of his penalty, Hill can participate in practice and preseason games, but won’t be eligible until Week 5 of the regular season.

The second-year player was suspended four games for performance-enhancing drugs last season. Hill identified the offending substance in that situation as Adderall.

Hill’s time at Florida was marred by a series of off-field incidents that raised enough concerns among NFL brass to allow him to go undrafted. In an interview with the New York Daily News last year, he talked about all he’d learned from his mistakes. That was two suspensions and eight forfeited  game checks ago.

Hill was expected to be an increased presence in the Giants secondary with the offseason departure of Kenny Phillips. The Giants will now have to look elsewhere for help in September.
