Phantom Foul Call Against Matt Besler Means He'll Miss Tuesday's Clash with Mexico
By Mike Cardillo
Friday night the U.S. National Team lost a World Cup qualifier to Costa Rica, 3-1 in San Jose. The team’s record 12-game winning streak was snapped. Michael Bradley sprained his ankle on the final kick of pregame warm ups. On top of that three starters: Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler and Jozy Altidore will miss Tuesday’s showdown with Mexico after picking yellow cards due to CONCACAF’s baffling accumulation rules.
The call on Besler (at the 5:40 mark of the video above) is a flat-out joke. Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell both initiates the conduct and flops while Besler has his back turned. Mexican official Marco Rodriguez lived up to his poor, card-happy reputation and gave the Sporting Kansas City defender a yellow.
Disgraceful. Hopefully American’s newsest soccer crusader — Keith Olbermann — catches wind of this.
As always, CONCACAF gon’ CONCACAF.
