Lovie Smith, who was fired by Chicago after a 10-6 record in 2012, just interviewed with the Houston Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle. Smith, a defensive-minded coach who guided the Bears to the Super Bowl, figures to be the first of perhaps half a dozen interviews. The Texans fired Gary Kubiak earlier this month after Houston lost its 11th straight game.

My .02: Like the idea of Smith, a defensive-first coach on a team that has defensive talent. Would be a very good hire.

Other names you’ll probably hear, with a pithy opinion on each:

* Bill O’Brien of Penn State (waste of time)
* David Shaw of Stanford (waste of time)
* Ken Whisenhunt of San Diego (he’ll get calls from many folks, perhaps the Jets, too)
* Jon Gruden of ESPN (hahaha, just kidding)
