Derek Jeter announced the 2014 season will be his last via a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Jeter will be 40 in June and is coming off an injury-plagued 2013 season, dating back to a broken ankle in the 2012 ALCS.

Even so, it’s still a shocking announcement considering Jeter is still — to many — the face of the sport.

Looks like for the second straight summer the Yankees will have a farewell tour for one of it’s “Core Four” players. This could trump the pomp and circumstance seen across baseball as Mariano Rivera said goodbye last summer.

Wow.
