Carmelo Anthony will opt out of his Knicks contract to become a free agent, according to a Yahoo! Sports report. The Knicks could offer Anthony a five-year $125 million contract. Anthony prefers a four-year $90 million or so deal and a chance to win something elsewhere.

Chicago and Houston have been the most rumored destinations for Anthony. Dallas was floated, possibly from his camp. There’s also the Miami Heat super-team option, similar to Charles Barkley joining the Rockets in 1996.

A star athlete is considering leaving $35 million on the table to leave New York for Houston. That is where the James Dolan Knicks are in 2014.
