Real Madrid-Roma Friendly Interrupted by Lots and LOTS of Fans on the Field

Remember last summer when a fan ran onto the field in Miami to hug Cristiano Ronaldo during a summer friendly? The fan was taken to court, but Ronaldo (or more specifically his management team) wrote a letter to the judge saying the charges should be dropped.

Even if you don’t remember it appears to have set off a trend. European teams come to America in the summer to play meaningless, high-priced soccer games and fans run onto the field. In the case of Mario Balotelli they snap selfies.

It all came to head Tuesday night in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl when about 20 fans ran onto the field late in the Real Madrid-Roma friendly, causing a chaotic scene with police rushing at fans, fans rushing at players with cameras in hand and player sitting on the grass with bemused expressions on their face. All the little hearts on Instagram offset any fines or repercussions, I guess.

As luck would have it, I’m attending the Liverpool-Manchester City game tonight at Yankee Stadium. I’ll be sure to film some blurry Vines and pics if Morganna the Kissing Bandit runs out and trys to plant one on Steven Gerrard.
