Thursday Night Football: All Three Home Teams Have Won by 20 or More Points So Far This Year

The New York Giants travel to Washington trying to end a dubious streak. The Thursday night games have been non-competitive this year, with the visitors losing by at least 20 points in all three contests. Last week’s was the worst of the bunch, as Tampa Bay was losing by 56-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Does the Thursday game–and coming in on a short week–have something to do with it? It’s something to monitor going forward, though the evidence on a view longer than “what has happened in the past 3 weeks” is more mixed.

Going back to 2002, which was an even 100 games before this year’s three contests, the home team is now 54-44-3 against the spread. The extreme results, though, are pretty balanced. Even with last week’s Tampa debacle, there have been more home teams that have failed to cover by at least 20 points (8) than visitors who have done so (7).
