Steven Souza Made an Amazing Catch to Save Jordan Zimmermann's No-Hitter

Jordan Zimmermann was one out away from a no-hitter Sunday vs. the Marlins. The Nationals righty served up a deep liner to the gap in left-center off the bat of Christian Yelich. Ninth-inning defensive replacement Steven Souza made an amazing, diving catch to save the day and preserve the the Nationals first no-hitter since moving to Washington in 2005. Souza, making only his sixth Major League appearance, had replaced Ryan Zimmerman.

In the kind of statistical quirk only baseball can produce, the Marlins no-hit the Tigers in the final game of the 2013 regular season with Henderson Alvarez on the mound.

The last no-hitter in the current Washington franchise’s history came in 1991 when Dennis Martinez threw a perfect game for the Montreal Expos against the Dodgers in July, 1991.

Washington opens the National League playoffs later this week as the No. 1 seed, playing the winner of the Giants-Pirates Wild Card game.
