Juan Mata doubled Manchester United’s lead vs. Liverpool Sunday with a controversial header at the far post five minutes before halftime. Ashley Young floated in a cross and it appeared as if Robin van Persie may have gotten a touch to it, thus putting Mata into an offside position. At first glance there was some question as to whether or not the Dutchman actually touched the ball, but he was officially credited with an assist for whatever that is worth. The linesman’s flag stayed down, regardless, and the goal stood.

The goal fulfills the (unofficial) requirement that every single big-time showdown in the Premier League must feature at least one questionable call by the referees to provide a postgame talking point.

United took an early 1-0 lead on Wayne Rooney’s goal, set-up by Antonio Valencia’s inch-perfect cross from the right.
