Fran McCaffery Was a Jerk When Asked About Adam Woodbury's Habit of Poking Opponents in the Eye

Adam Woodbury, an Iowa basketball player, can’t quit his dirty habit of poking opponents in the eyes. He did it twice against Wisconsin in January and was eviscerated by ESPN announcer Dan Dakich.

Woodbury did it again Sunday against Maryland and then the media asked his coach, Fran McCaffery, about it afterward:

"Q. Is it a flagrant now if you poke a guy in the eye? I’m just curious. I thought maybe that explained that. FRAN McCAFFERY: You know, don’t misconstrue it. That’s an excellent crew. But on that one, I don’t know. Q. That’s three times he’s got somebody in the eye. How does this keep happening? FRAN McCAFFERY: Next question. Ask an intelligent question. Q. Why is that not an intelligent question? FRAN McCAFFERY: Because I said so."

Sound logic, there, Fran.

You should know that McCaffery has a rich history of clownish antics – in 2012 he body slammed a chair in frustration; in 2014 he lost his cool, went off on a referee and bumped him, resulting in an ejection.

Once? An accident. Multiple times? Against the best player on the opponent? Woodbury is just taking “hand down, man down” to a level he doesn’t need to go to. He’s 7-foot-1. Get that gangly arm straight up. It’ll work just fine.

The Big 10 should serious consider a 1-game suspension if this happens again. And that could be significant – the Hawkeyes are poised to be a bubble team next month ahead of the NCAA Tournament, but with a strong RPI (38) and Strength of Schedule (10), Iowa is in good shape right now. It is 4-5 against the RPI Top 50, and the rest of the schedule  only has one NCAA Tourney team (at Indiana, March 3).
