Tampa Bay Releases Josh McCown, a Pretty Good Indicator of Going QB at First Overall

Tampa Bay is releasing Josh McCownafter just one season, according to multiple reports. McCown, 35, was just signed last offseason as a free agent following a revival in Chicago.

With Tampa Bay holding the first overall pick, this is an obvious indicator that they are going QB at first overall – either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. They still have Mike Glennon under contract (and much cheaper) to start if the top draft pick isn’t ready to go in week one.

McCown, meanwhile, will probably not find the market to be as favorable this time around. At best, he’ll be signing as a preferred backup for another team with a young starter, or a team that wants to improve its depth at the position.

What an embarrassment for Lovie Smith and GM Jason Licht. They were both hired last January, and their first signature move was signing McCown. A year later, he’s gone.
