Chris Borland announced his retirement from the NFL after one season last Monday. On Sunday the ex-49ers linebacker went on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer to discuss his decision. The subject of money came up and Borland said he was giving back 75 percent of the signing bonus in his contract with San Francisco, worth nearly half a million dollars ($463,077).

The San Jose Mercury-News Tim Kawakami wrote about Borland’s signing bonus in his Sunday notes column. He noted the rookie deal Borland signed spread the signing bonus ($617,438 ) across four years, so the team could have made it into a thorny issue if they decided to pursue the remaining money. It’s a moot point now that Borland says he’s going to return it.
