#TBT: The 1993 WWE King of the Ring

About a month ago, Ryan Glasspiegel convinced me to subscribe to WWE Network in order to write a post about WrestleMania. The premise: it’s only $9.99 and you can cancel right after the show.

Flash forward to May 7 and, dammit, I still haven’t canceled the subscription. Would you, dear reader, be surprised if I disclosed that I am not a cool person and have zero social life. Of course I blog for a living, so you could already infer as much. Thursday morning, Twitter user @manecci mentioned the 1993 King of the Ring — Hulk Hogan’s final WWF appearance until 2002 — was being shown on the Network as part of Throwback Thursday. Like a moth to a flame, there was no way to resist watching.

Was this a good decision? Call it the old Mad Magazine “you’re a winner and a loser” situation.

Either you “get” wrestling or you don’t. There is zero middle ground. If you’re me, Jim Ross belting out with utter sincerity that Bret Hart is the most courageous athlete ever during his battle with Bam Bam Bigelow (RIP) in the King of the Ring final is hilarious, 22 years after the fact. JR couldn’t contain his outrage when Jerry ‘the King’ Lawler ambushed the Hitman at his KoTR coronation, either.

Honestly, there should be an iPhone app that allows Good Ol’ JR to narrate your entire life.

Everything about professional wrestling is ridiculous.

Paying $9.99 a month to occasionally watch stuff that happened 20+ years ago might be even more ridiculous — in a winner and a loser way. The crowd shots are always fun. At least I got to blog about it, I guess.
