Tiger Woods Takes USGA Director Mike Davis' Advice, Spends Two Days at Chambers Bay

We know that Tiger Woods made a trip up to the U.S. Open course, Chambers Bay, and now Tiger has offered up his opinion of the course. Unlike Rory McIlroy, who doesn’t believe he needs to put in the amount of time at Chambers Bay suggested by USGA executive director Mike Davis, Woods and major champion Phil Mickelson, who has only the U.S. Open left to collect a career grand slam and said he “really enjoyed” the course, heeded Davis’ advice and already visited the course.

"“I thought that was interesting Mike would say something like that,” Woods said after a pro-am before this week’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. “When Mike says something like that you have to pay attention because he’s a smart guy. We spent a lot of time and did a lot of homework.” “It’s very challenging because Mike (Davis) has so many options,” Woods said. “We don’t see this even at the British Open because the greens aren’t banked like this.”"

Like Woods said, he spent a lot of time feeling out the course.

"“I don’t take a long time in practice rounds, but we played in 3 1/2 hours, just the front nine, had lunch, kind of sat down there and talked about it, and played another 3 1/2 on the back. So we spent a while. “The next day, yesterday, was a little bit quicker, because we knew what to do, what to expect, what lines to take. We just knew how to play the golf course.”"

When looking at Chambers Bay, Woods will have to improve his accuracy off the tee if he wants to have a chance at winning a 15th major. Woods spent most of his time at the Masters hitting his second shots from the trees, rough, and even other fairways. During the final round of the Masters, Woods managed to hit only two fairways. That won’t be an option at Chambers Bay where, should Woods miss the fairway, he’ll be in the tall stuff hacking away like a weekend golfer just to get the ball back in play.
