Nike Soccer has released this ad for the United States Women’s National Team ahead of their first World Cup game. The song they chose for the ad is The Guess Who’s “American Woman.” Talk about thinking outside the box. I’m guessing the people in charge of this campaign didn’t exactly burn the midnight oil coming up with the song selection. Here’s the official TBL e-mail exchange discussing the selection.

Douglas: What an outside-the-box song choice.

Cardillo: Yeah, but The Guess Who are a band from Canada … where the WWC is being played. I thought that was a nice touch.

Douglas: Truly a shitty song no matter what country the artist comes from.

Lisk: I’ve got no time left for Stephen. I’m on my way to better things. I’ll find myself some wings.

Cardillo: My response: The Guess Who rock.

Duffy: Would have gone for an American song…and a woman.

My main problem with this song is that it’s 45-years old and it had its undeserved resurgence thanks to an Austin Powers movie over a decade ago. The good news is that we have four years to find another song about both America and women for the 2019 Women’s World Cup ad. In the meantime, here’s the perfect song for Nike’s Canadian customers.
