Maren Mjelde Scored a Perfect Free Kick for Norway vs. Germany
By Mike Cardillo
Maren Mjelde curled in an excellent free kick to draw Norway level with Germany in Women’s World Cup Group B play Thursday in Ottawa. At first glance it almost looked like there wouldn’t be enough room to get the ball over the wall, but Mjelde hit it perfectly and got it to spin just under the bar leaving Germany keeper Nina Angerer without any chance of stopping it.
Germany, the pre-tournament favorite alongside the United States, won its first game 10-0 but looked much less imposing for long stretches today. That said, the goal was only Norway’s third shot of the game. Mjelde also scored on a free kick vs. Thailand.
