Baseball is trying something different at the Home Run Derby this Monday in Cincinnati. Amazingly the new format — timed rounds, head-to-head brackets, etc. — has been embraced on the Internet. Crazy, I know.

Since there’s a bracket this year, it might spark more interest in Las Vegas? Maybe? Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is the favorite per odds installed by Bovada:

Todd Frazier … 7/2
Kris Bryant … 5/1
Prince Fielder … 11/2
Albert Pujols … 6/1
Anthony Rizzo … 13/2
Josh Donaldson … 7/1
Joc Pederson … 7/1
Manny Machado … 7/1

Frazier as the favorite makes sense since he’s played 282 games at Great American Ballpark, where he’s mashed 59 home runs. I still like Prince Fielder to win it and he’s no stranger to Cincinnati going back to his days with the Brewers (12 homers/55 games). Naturally Frazier and Fielder are paired against each other in the first round.

Joc Pederson is the streaky kind of hitter who could get hot and club a ton of homers, but his odds are lower than fellow rookie Kris Bryant.

As we’ve seen at the Derby in recent years, it’s best to pace your rounds so you have something left once the finals roll around.
