Mike Francesa Tells Other CBS Hosts to "Bring It On"

Mike Francesa tends to take a lot of vacation days in the summer, but his show returned to WFAN last week and on Friday the veteran host managed to stir the pot on a couple fronts. In the closing minutes Friday he chimed in on ESPN dismissing Colin Cowherd. He also took aim at his own company’s CBS Sports Minutes — perhaps you’ve heard the commentaries on your local affiliate. Notably he criticized host Damon Amendolara signing off his updates using the initials “DA.”

“What’s with the initials?” Francesa groused as he proceeded to trash the entire idea of the Sports Minute.

Oh right, Francesa’s radio show airs on CBS and his troubles with management are well-documented.

The story could have ended there and probably stayed inside the Francesa fan bubble, except another CBS host, John Kincade, went on an eight-minute rant about it over the weekend. Kincade implored other CBS hosts to sign off using their initials throughout the day. (Smart play by Kincade: take a swing at Francesa and media sites such as this are going to blog about it.)

That brings us to Monday afternoon. Odds are Francesa wouldn’t have mentioned the CBS Sports Minute ever again on his program, except a caller asked about what he thought about the other hosts taking shots at him. His answer was peak Francesa:

“Bring it on,” Francesa said. “Here’s what they should do, they should worry about trying to figure out how to get the network going in the right way. When they have a little success they can talk. Until then just be quiet.”

CBS executives probably love this kind of stuff, right?

Unless you’re caught up in the insular world of sports talk radio, especially New York sports talk radio, you probably don’t care much about this bickering. The funniest part of the story is that Amendolara attended Francesa-Con earlier this year.
