Without the presence of all of golf’s young stars, the Wyndham Championship’s TV ratings were sure to be a letdown, that is, until this guy named Tiger Woods committed to play in the tournament in an attempt to extend his season into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Woods’ presence prompted event organizers to print around 45,000 more tickets for the public because it was the first time in his career that the 14-time major champion has played in the event and the turnout was expected to be overwhelming.

Tiger’s group drew big crowds, even on Wednesday during the pro-am, but no one could have seen Tiger battling his way to the top of the leaderboard and teeing off on Sunday in the second to last group wearing the famed victory red shirt. Tiger did not win the event and won’t play again until the Frys.com tournament that kicks off the 2015-2016 season, but it’s obvious that the public still can’t get enough of the man.

On a Sunday that didn’t include Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, or any of the other guys who we’ve/I’ve been drooling over all season, the Wyndham Championship scored a 3.9 rating according to Nielsen. That is the best rating for any tournament that isn’t a major championship since May of 2013 when The Players drew a 5.7 on NBC during a Tiger win. If you remember, the PGA Championship Sunday rating just a couple of weeks ago was a 4.4, and that featured the new world number one, Jordan Spieth and new number three, Jason Day.

So, if you’re like me and hoping that Tiger just kind of takes a back seat for a little while and attempts to actually get his game to major championship level, you’re out of luck. Tiger Woods still draws a crowd, especially when he plays well.
