Jason Day Could Become New World No. 1 at Deutsche Bank Championship

Jason Day is on a roll. No, seriously, in his last four starts the 27-year-old Aussie has three wins and is a combined 59-under par. If you count his tie for fourth at The Open Championship, and his T12 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Day is a combined 73-under par. WOW!

After tweaking his back and withdrawing from the Wednesday pro-am at The Barclays, Day turned in a Saturday score of 63 and a ridiculous Sunday score of 62 that propelled him into a six-stroke lead and the lead in the FedExCup standings. It’s only the third time that a player has shot 63 or better in the final two rounds of a tournament to win. Jimmy Walker did it this year at the Sony Open and John Cook did so at the ’97 Bob Hope Classic.

Day has now tied Jordan Spieth for the most wins on tour this season with four, granted, two of Spieth’s wins were major championships and Day has only collected – sarcasm – a measly one major win with his PGA Championship victory. Day also has a chance to become the world number one if he wins this week at the Deutsche Bank Championship and both Jordan Spieth and Rory McIroy fail to finish in the top three.

"“I felt like it was my time,” Day said. “Like mentally I felt like, you paid your dues, now it’s time to go out and win tournaments.”"

If Day wins another tournament on his way to a FedExCup trophy there will be an interesting debate in whether or not he should be the Player of the Year.

"“I think winning the FedExCup and maybe one or two more tournaments, that could put my name in the mix for Player of the Year,” Day said. “I’m not sure. I’m going to leave that to the peers, to the people. That will definitely throw my name in the mix.”"

I still say two major championships in one season along with two other wins, barely missing the playoff at The Open Championship, and a second place finish at the PGA Championship trumps one major, three wins and a FedExCup trophy, but there more than likely will be some debate.

Spieth also rebounds quite well after missed cuts. After The Players, where Spieth missed the cut, he bounced back with a tie for second at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, finished T30 at the AT&T, and won the U.S. Open and John Deere Classic. So even though Jason Day has had a spectacular season, Spieth should still collect the Player of the Year award no matter what happens the rest of the way out.
