The New York Giants and Jason Pierre-Paul have agreed to terms on a one-year contract. The defensive end, who lost parts of three fingers in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, passed his physicals yesterday and could return as early as Nov. 15.

Pierre-Paul didn’t sign his franchise tag offer in the offseason hoping for a long-term deal instead. The injury, obviously, changed contract discussions for both sides.

Pierre-Paul’s effectiveness on the field is a great unknown. Rebounding from such a traumatic hand injury seems like an uphill battle as he’ll have to significantly alter the way he rushes the passer. That said, if he can regain a portion of his previous form, it’s will provide a boost to the Giants as they compete for a playoff spot down the stretch.
