Garrett McNamara set a Guinness World Record a few years ago by surfing a 78-foot wave. So the fact that he took on a 50-footer last week shouldn’t be a surprise. Unfortunately, the wave got the best of him this time. McNamara, 48, was rushed to the hospital after a brutal wipeout off the coast of California. He reportedly underwent arm and shoulder surgery. It seems like things could have been worse.

Of all the ways a middle-aged man could hurt his shoulder, this one is certainly among the most badass.
