Compassionate Kids Write Letters to Blair Walsh, Are OK with Failure

It’s been a particularly rough work week for Minnesotans after watching their beloved Vikings snatch defeat from the jaws of victory Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. There are undoubtedly many adults who have yet to make peace with Blair Walsh in the wake of his woeful 27-yard field goal attempt.

A group of first-graders at Blaine Elementary, though, have already rebounded. As part of a unit on empathy (apparently a thing), the students penned supportive letters to Walsh.

The sentiments shared were nice enough, ranging from “I still love you” to “good try” to “it’s okay to make mistakes.” You know, typical Trophy Generation stuff.

It’s as if these youngsters are completely oblivious to how important professional sports are in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps a better lesson than learning about empathy and compassion would be to take a field trip to the stadium on a subzero day and endure the elements for four hours. Let’s see how the peace and love shtick changes after that.

If that’s enough maybe have the class bully ramp up the juice on owed lunch money so the kids can know the terror of a bad moneyline beat. Really prepare them for the sobering reality of adulthood.
