Gary Bettman will still be NHL commissioner for a long time. Per a report, the league has agreed to extend him through 2022. Not clear how much the contract is worth, though Bettman earned about $9.6 million for 2013-14.

Bettman has been NHL commissioner since 1993. His tenure has been best known for three player lockouts, resulting in two shortened seasons and the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 seasons. Sprinkle in some ill-fated expansion and media deals that all but removed the league from the mainstream sports discussion in the United States.

The argument for Bettman is the expansion of league revenue over his tenure, which always looks better when you discount inflation, don’t compare it to other leagues, and don’t account for the extra franchises added.

Bettman’s biggest project over the next few years: more expansion.
