Former BMX superstar Dave Mirra was found dead on Thursday afternoon from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mirra was visiting friends in Greenville, North Carolina shortly before his death.

At around 4:00 p.m. local time, Greenville Police responded to an apparent suicide. When they arrived they found the 41-year-old sitting in a truck with a gunshot wound.

Mirra has long been considered one of the greatest professional BMX riders in the world, and became a wildly successful rally driver as well. He won 24 medals at the X Games during his career.

Allen Thomas, the mayor of Greenville released a statement after the news broke:

"“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon.”"

Mirra is survived by his wife and two children.
