Rickie Fowler lost in a four-hole playoff to Hideki Matsuyama on Sunday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Fowler held a two-stroke lead heading into the 17th hole, but after hitting into the water, he allowed Matsuyama to creep back up on him and then when he knocked his tee shot into the water on 17 again on the final hole of the playoff, Fowler’s run at his first PGA Tour win of the season came to an end.

Afterwards, Fowler was very emotional during his press conference. His family was in attendance at the Phoenix Open and Fowler obviously wanted to collect a win in front of his grandpa and dad, who have yet to see him win in person.

"“The hard part is having, you know, all my friends and family and grandpa and my dad who haven’t seen me win, but I will be able to kinda hang with them tonight. I’ll be all right. With how good I’m playing, I know I can win. That’s the hard part.”"

Fowler is currently ranked fourth in the official world golf rankings and will likely win a tournament this year, maybe even a major tournament; he’s definitely proven he’s good enough.
