Josh Morgan shot himself while cleaning his gun. I don’t have a punchline for that, because it’s impossible to come up with something funnier than that sentence.

The 30-year-old former NFL wide receiver has been charged with misdemeanor reckless use of a firearm in Virginia and has a court date set for March. The incident reportedly occurred on January 31, when police responded to a report of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Morgan said he was cleaning the gun when it accidentally went off, leaving him with non-life threatening injuries. He had to be hospitalized as a result.

I have so many questions, but let’s start here: Josh, why were you cleaning your gun while it was loaded? Seriously man, Rule No. 1, take the bullets out before you clean the thing. No better yet, after this incident, Rule No. 1 for you should be never own a gun. Or a knife. Or really anything sharp.

Morgan spent seven years in the NFL, and was cut by the New Orleans Saints prior to the 2015 season. The former sixth-round pick played four seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, two for the Washington Redskins and spent 2014 with the Chicago Bears.

This further illustrates that when you combine athletes and guns, good things rarely happen. Although, that should have been obvious after the Plaxico Burress, Jayson Williams and Gilbert Arenas incidents.
