Jim Harbaugh bringing the Michigan Wolverines to Florida on Spring Break caused a kerfuffle and some unseemly, hypocritical pearl clutching.

Michigan’s trip is really about recruiting. Outrage from elsewhere is really about recruiting. But, it’s worth noting the major impact on the players has been positive. Besides the free trip to Florida, it has been beneficial for “student-athlete” academics, which purports to be the point of this multi-billion-dollar entertainment industry.

jake butt was happy he was able to get the tough first week of spring practice out of the way during off time, so he could focus on school.

"“It’s impacted it in a positive way,” he said regarding academics. “A lot of people argued about this being our time off but normally we would have had spring practice last week when I had two exams, a paper and a bunch of Spanish homework. You have to balance that with spring ball when you’re sore. You don’t really get a lot of schoolwork done during the first week of spring practice normally. Knocking this out when you don’t have classes, it simplifies things a lot as we learn the playbook and then can focus on school.”"

That’s not the only academic benefit for Butt. Since Michigan’s spring practice starts earlier, it ends earlier. So, as we’ve mentioned before, Michigan players will get 19 days off football before final exams.
