Sting, who is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of this past generation, suffered what was reportedly a career-ending injury this past September in a match with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions. Though this news is not altogether unexpected, it is still sad that the legend is not going out on his own terms.

According to TMZ, Sting consulted with multiple doctors who felt that it was too risky for him to continue to wrestle after “being formally diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis — a condition affecting the nerves that can result in extreme pain and discomfort.” Edge retired with the same injury in 2011.

Sting is 56 years old, and it was miraculous that at that age he was able to have the quality of matches he did in the past year with Rollins and Triple H. He will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in a couple weeks in Dallas. Hopefully, if he wants them, there will be appearances down the line where he can advance angles with his persona; that doesn’t require physicality.
