Stephen Ross Blames Joe Philbin For Ryan Tannehill's Lack Of Development

Stephen Ross is without a doubt one of the five worst owners in the NFL, so when he bashes someone, we should all take it with a fairly large grain of salt. Earlier this week, Ross threw shade on former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin.

When asked if he thought coaching played a big role in stunting quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s growth, Ross said, “I think so.” He indicated that new head coach Adam Gase would be a vast improvement for Tannehill, but he didn’t stop there:

"He’s had one coach in his four years in the league. He actually played under Mike Sherman in the same system when he came into the league. I think with Adam’s experience and track record with quarterbacks, giving the confidence back to Ryan that probably he hasn’t had, and the support of the coaches, I think he’s very optimistic and looking forward to this year."

Way to be diplomatic about an ex-employee you once made the brilliant decision to hire, Stephen.

Philbin’s time in Miami was an absolute mess and his coaching – combined with that of Mike Sherman and Bill Lazor – probably did have a lot to do with Tannehill’s slow growth. That said, Ross shouldn’t be bashing former employees. It’s tacky and petty.

Here’s the thing, if Robert Kraft wants to rip a former employee, I’m fine with it. He’s earned the right after guiding the Patriots to four Super Bowl titles and keeping the team at or near the top of the NFL for the last 15 years. I’m far from a Patriots fan, but I feel secure in saying that Ross ain’t Bob Kraft. In fact, he’s Goofus to Kraft’s Gallant.

Since Ross took over ownership of the team, Miami has gone 49-63 and showed absolutely no positive growth or direction. He hasn’t earned the right to talk badly about anyone else, regardless of how awful they are.
