Ernie Els is having a putting apocalypse at the Masters. The Internet has had some fun with it. Mike Lupica thinks anyone laughing at Els should “get lost.”

Golf is a difficult, frustrating endeavor. There’s a powerful irony seeing someone as successful as Els struggle like the rest of us mere mortals. This was noted. Jokes were made at his expense. Not sure anyone wishes Els everlasting ill will.

Mocking humor is an inherent part of the sports landscape. That’s not just purportedly knuckle dragging fans. Lupica’s comment irritates because he’s a sports columnist and a sports radio host. Making wry comments about others’ misfortune is what he does for a living.

Here’s a sampling of Lupica’s tweets, just from the first week of April 2016.

Sports stars, not toiling for American colleges, are handsomely paid actors. They are there for our amusement. The rest of us are the groundlings. We can’t literally throw apple cores at them. But, making snide comments about their performance is part of the fun.
